Why Most AI Search Visibility Tools Are Optimizing for the Wrong India

We're living through a fundamental transformation in how people discover brands. Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)—also called AI SEO or Answer Engine Optimization—represents the shift from optimizing for Google's "10 blue links" to optimizing for AI-synthesized responses with embedded brand recommendations.

With 800 million weekly ChatGPT users and 46% of queries now using search-enabled AI platforms (Semrush, 2025), users aren't browsing search results anymore—they're getting direct answers. When someone asks "best CRM for a 10-person startup under $500/month" or "where to buy ethnic wear for office in Mumbai," AI platforms synthesize responses and recommend specific brands. If you're not in that AI-generated answer, you're invisible.

But here's the problem most platforms solving for AI visibility haven't figured out: the prompts you test determine everything. Get the prompts wrong, and you're optimizing for a market that doesn't exist.

I've spent months documenting how Indian users actually interact with AI platforms, not how we think they should, but how they actually do. And the gap between these two realities? That's where marketing budgets disappear.

The Synthetic Prompt Problem

Most AI search visibility platforms take a straightforward approach: scrape Google keywords, convert them into "AI-friendly" prompts, test them across ChatGPT or Perplexity, and report back on brand visibility.

Sounds logical but it is fundamentally broken for the Indian market.

Here's why: Indian users don't prompt AI in perfect English nor do they use ChatGPT like Google Search.

When I analyzed actual ChatGPT usage patterns in India (detailed in our recent research paper), I found something fascinating. Real user prompts look like this:

  • "best kurta for office under 2000 that looks professional"
  • "which face cream for oily skin in mumbai humidity"
  • "laptop for college student 40k budget good for coding and gaming"

But synthetic prompts generated from Google keywords look like this:

  • "What are the best professional kurtas for office wear?"
  • "Which face cream is suitable for oily skin?"
  • "What is the best laptop for college students?"

See the difference? The first one will trigger a web search for freshness and contextual relevance, the latter may not. Your marketing team is optimising for the latter.

Real prompts contain the messy, specific context that actually drives purchase decisions: budget constraints, climate considerations, use-case specificity and conversational language mixing. Synthetic prompts strip all of that away.

When you test AI visibility using synthetic prompts, you're measuring performance in a sanitized scenario that doesn't match how your customers actually search. You might rank #1 for a perfectly-phrased query that nobody in India is actually asking.

Let me tell you about a fashion brand we analyzed. Using standard US-based AI visibility tools, they looked decent, appearing in about 35% of AI responses for "ethnic wear" queries.

Why Deeply Researched Buyer Intent Matters More Than Real-Time Data

I know what you're thinking: "But don't we need real-time data to stay current?"

Actually, no. And here's why that's counterintuitive but crucial.

Real-time data captures noise. Deeply researched buyer intent captures patterns.

When you optimize for these deeply-researched patterns, you're not just improving today's AI visibility. You're positioning your brand to be part of the next training cycle of these AI models. That's when the real compounding happens.

The Long-Term Compounding Effect

Here's something most AI visibility platforms won't tell you: optimizing for today's AI responses is table stakes. The real opportunity is becoming part of tomorrow's training data.
